During the Signature Awards Ceremony, Georgia Gulf was touted as an employer who adds value through innovative programs that encourage and support retirement savings.  Jodell Ayers, GGC Manager, Compensation and Benefits accepted the award on behalf of Georgia Gulf from PSCA President David Wray.

Signature Awards Magazine will soon feature GGC’s Fiscally Fit campaign in an upcoming edition of the publication.  The PSAC is a national-non profit association of companies that sponsor and support profit sharing and 401(k) plans for 4 million employees.

Rita Impacts Industry

Hurricane Rita, following close behind Katrina, made its mark on Georgia Gulf facilities in Lake Charles and Plaquemine.  The plants were shutdown for an extended period of time following Rita due to the absence of natural gas, feedstocks and utilities. Lake Charles had only superficial damage and repairs were quickly made.

The company declared "force majeure" on caustic soda and vinyl resins, which basically gives the company the ability alter or cease its contracted supply to customers during a period of crisis like the hurricanes.  Other products were put on allotment.  The company has now resumed operations at all of its facilities.  (The PHH Monomers joint venture plant was shut down prior to the hurricane for a turnaround. It has since resumed production as well.)

Although Hurricane Rita caused less damage than anticipated, Chemical Market Associates Inc. (CMAI), a petrochemical consultancy, said the hurricane “resulted in the largest precautionary shutdown of petrochemical and refinery-related assets in the history of the United States industry.”

Confined Space Rescue Team Trains for Maximum Performance

In 1993 the United States became the first country to enforce confined space regulations on a national scale. Confined spaces are defined as:
 1. Those areas which are not intended for continual employee occupancy

 2. Have a limited means of egress, and
 3. Have the potential for physical, chemical or atmospheric engulfment

Georgia Gulf’s Confined Space Rescue Team (CSRT), a part of the Emergency Response Team, trains monthly, emphasizing hands-on practical exercises.  The goal of the CSRT is to safely perform a rescue from confined spaces using ropes and associated rescue hardware and software.

Key components to the confined space rescue process are the:  reaction time, contact time, response time, assessment time, preparation time and rescue time.

Habitat House in progress.

Hammering for Habitat

Georgia Gulf Aberdeen has teamed up with the Monroe County Habitat for Humanity and is building a house in the Athens/Becker community.  In addition to contributing $10,000 to Habitat for the project, GGC volunteers are working to turn a dream into reality for Randy Stripling and his three young children.

Volunteers are still needed if you’d like to join the team.  Hopefully the family will be in their new home by Thanksgiving.
